Hydroponic grows are sprouting across the nation. The first big success was the San Diego based company Renewable, which has successfully expanded their hydroponic growing system to 12 hydroponic farms across the nation. The San Diego based company GreenJar has also produced a system that utilizes hydroponics to grow greens.


In hydroponics, water is mixed with nutrients to create a nutrient solution which is used to hydrate plant roots. The roots absorb the nutrients and grow in hydroponic systems. Hydro systems also use photonic light to circulate water so plants have constant water, and oxygen throughout their root system.


Some growers use the hyphae system to grow plants in their own homes using hydroponic farming. Hydroponics is gaining popularity for home gardening for its easy setup and large yield potential. The system is much more efficient, uses fewer chemicals, and doesn’t need to be watered during the whole growing process.


In addition to hydroponics growing, many growers are using hydroponic systems to start their plants from seed. Whether you’re trying to grow herbs for your family or you’re interested in starting a hydroponic garden for your kids, hydroponics allows you to start plants with little or no human involvement. Hydroponic growers grow without soil, roots, or any type of growing medium.


These systems can easily be set up in a small space such as a kitchen, closet, or balcony. Large crops like lettuce or spinach can grow large roots or vines and grow in a small hydroponic system in less than three days. Growers in Oregon have been growing lettuce in the basement of a school to provide fresh salad to the kids during lunch. These lettuce plants have grown for three months with only three small watering sessions. In addition, these lettuce plants have shown the ability to grow massive amounts of plant matter.


Many growers say their greenhouses  produce more of their plants than the plants they started from seed produced in their own home. One grower in Colorado has a plant growing in his greenhouse for over five years and has been producing about 1.2 pounds of vegetables per week. He says his plants could easily reach upwards of 3.5 pounds per week if not watered as well. There are no additional costs in hydroponics for things such as soil, nutrients, or lighting.



Hydroponic and aeroponic gardening in the kitchen are two very different approaches to gardening, but most produce from hydroponic farming can also be grown aeroponically, either in direct air or indirect sunlight. Hydroponic farming supplies organic plants with nutrients, water and oxygen, unlike soil grown plants. Many gardeners grow soil plants using hydroponic methods, but there are many more tools and processes you can use.


Conventional gardening is limited by the amount of soil required for plants to thrive. Hydroponic growing has some definite advantages that conventional farming does not. Many plants require specific soil nutrients to grow properly. If you want to grow healthy organic vegetables, most hydroponic growing methods have their own growing medium. Dry vegetables like beans, carrots and squash grow well if you keep them hydrated. If you put your dried vegetables in the fridge, the temperature helps retain the nutrients they need for growth. Some vegetables like onions, carrots and potatoes need to be planted at the end of the growing season. If you start growing them in the fall, the temperatures in the soil may be too cold for the initial growth, and the soil will likely be dry.
