vertical farming improve food security and help the environment

How can vertical farming improve food security?

As a researcher in agronomy and systems science, I study the impact of new technologies on agricultural and food systems in many countries. I am particularly interested in the interaction between agriculture, human and food production, the development of tools and methods that contribute to more sustainable food production, and I study the impact of agriculture on human health and well-being.

Why vertical farming?

Our focus is on the interaction between agriculture, human and food production, with a special interest in environmental impact. Agriculture and food production are the biggest drivers of environmental impact in the world, and vertical agriculture is a promising technology that greatly improves the use of energy and resources for agriculture.

Our focus is on the effects of agriculture on human health. For example, in order to reduce the potential for new resistant strains of bacteria to emerge in the field, we need to develop new technologies to prevent and control the introduction of new bacterial species that increase the risk of food contamination.

Our focus is on the use of innovative methods, tools and technologies to better understand and adapt the interaction between agriculture and food systems.

What is vertical farming?

The concept of vertical farming is quite new and not yet mainstream. Vertical farming is farming in columns or towers. It is a promising concept that can improve everything from food production efficiency to soil health, water use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Vertical farming is an ideal solution to the need for more food production to meet the growing demand, but it also provides an opportunity to improve the efficiency of food production.

Agriculture is a science that uses science and technology to improve crop and livestock production. By allowing farmers to use a portion of their land for more food production, vertical farming has been suggested as a way to improve agronomy and food security. In particular, the vertical farming method can greatly increase the yield of small plots, allowing farmers to grow large seedlings in small cages, each with several hundred or thousands of plants that bear fruit or vegetables throughout the year.

Vertical farming is based on the fact that many crops when their roots are not in contact with the soil, for example cucumber, tomato, melon and others. The roots of the plant can absorb two kilograms of water per day. This represents a very efficient system that can significantly reduce water consumption.

By reducing soil contact, vertical farming can significantly increase crop yields. The most obvious advantage of vertical farming method is the reduction of soil surface in direct sunlight, thus reducing the energy required for food ripening.

One study found that the total energy consumption of a vertical farm can be reduced by 80% of the energy consumption of a conventional farm.

Vertical farming can increase crop yields and reduce the use of pesticides, thus reducing environmental pollution. For example, wind turbines can meet energy needs for vertical fields, as vertical fields can take advantage of strong natural winds in the Northern Hemisphere.

Vertical farms can also be an economically viable method to increase land productivity. An analysis of potential vertical farm revenue flows found that revenues could be between $ 3.24 billion and $ 18.45 billion per year, between $ 2,400 and, 9,600 per square meter (greenhouse yields are generally higher than normal farms).

Many vertical farms already exist in China and Japan. Many have improved productivity by performing extremely well. In July 2017, the first industrial vertical farm was launched in Guangzhou. In October of the same year, a vertical farming system for vegetable cultivation was introduced in Beijing.

How does vertical farming help the environment?

Vertical farming uses less land than conventional farming. However, it requires much less water than conventional farming. Vertical farms are able to grow crops all year round and do not require pesticides and other chemicals. It also produces high quality food without using too much energy. This means that it has a lot of environmental benefits.

What does vertical farming look like?

To make the vertical field even better, the plants do not grow in the ground. Instead, the plants are grown in trays and grown in the air. It's like most aquariums work. This means that soil is not used and water is not wasted.

Does vertical farming work?

Most people think that vertical fields are a myth and nothing will grow in the air. However, this is not true. Some types of food do not grow in the air. For example, potatoes do not grow in the air. However, strawberries, cucumbers and beans can. Because these trees grow on the ground.

In fact, vertical fields have many advantages. They can be built at low cost and work in any weather. They do not use pesticides and they produce high quality food.
